Beeswax, also known as yellow wax, is a natural substance secreted by the wax glands of worker bees located beneath their abdomens. Its primary components include fatty acids, free fatty alcohols, and carbohydrates. In addition, it contains carotenoids, vitamin A, and various aromatic compounds, contributing to its unique properties.
Beeswax has a wide range of applications across different industries. In cosmetics, it is commonly used in products such as lotions, lipsticks, and face creams for its emollient and protective qualities. In candle making, it serves as a key ingredient due to its high melting point and pleasant scent. In the pharmaceutical field, it is used in dental waxes, pill coatings, and base waxes. It's even used in the food industry as a coating for fruits and as a packaging material. In agriculture, beeswax is applied to protect fruit trees from pests and diseases, while beekeepers use it to construct hive combs and wax bowls.
According to GB/T 2431-2009, the physicochemical requirements for beeswax specify a melting point between 62°C and 67°C, and a refractive index (at 75°C) ranging from 1.4410 to 1.4430. To measure this accurately, an Abbe refractometer is typically used. However, for more advanced and efficient testing, the ATAGO NAR-2T high-temperature Abbe refractometer is ideal, capable of reaching up to 120°C. This device is widely used by companies like Hangzhou Bee Words Bee Industry Co., Ltd. and Hangzhou Tianchu Honey Source Health Products Co., Ltd.
Another option is the fully automatic digital refractometer, the Rx-5000i, which features built-in Peltier temperature control. This model offers several advantages over traditional methods. It eliminates the need to melt the sample first and transfer it to the prism, as the sample melts automatically during the temperature control process. The Peltier system allows for faster and more precise temperature regulation compared to water baths. Additionally, the large LCD screen displays results directly, without the need for manual adjustments or reading scales.
The measurement accuracy of the Rx-5000i is exceptionally high, reaching ±0.00003 RI. This makes it particularly suitable for measuring the refractive index of substances with high melting points, such as beeswax and propolis. The test procedure is straightforward: set the temperature to 75°C, calibrate using distilled water, place the sample in the chamber, wait for it to melt, press the test button, repeat the process three times, and then clean the cell for the next sample.
For example, two samples tested showed refractive indices of 1.406066 and 1.44070 respectively. These results highlight the importance of accurate measurement in quality control processes.
Beyond beeswax, the Rx-5000i can be used for other high-melting-point materials as well.
