The automotive lighting industry is undergoing a significant transformation, with LED manufacturers intensifying their efforts to capture a larger share of the car market. While most vehicle models still rely on traditional halogen headlights, higher-end models have started adopting xenon lamps. However, even in these cases, the innovation remains limited—primarily focused on improving the design of the lamp assembly and optimizing optical efficiency through lens and reflector systems. True technological breakthroughs within the lighting units themselves are still lacking.
This shift has sparked a "war" among LED manufacturers as they vie for dominance in the automotive sector. The mainland automotive LED market has become a key battleground, with major players like Longda leading the charge in the supply chain. Top-tier automotive backlight suppliers such as Guangzhou Zhengao Electronic Alliance are expanding their reach, while companies like Cree are collaborating with local manufacturers like Esda to develop advanced LED solutions. Meanwhile, Osram and German company Continental are also entering the fray, aiming to strengthen their foothold in the Chinese market through strategic partnerships.
At the 2017 Shenzhen Autumn Auto Parts Exhibition, over 8,000 booths attracted more than 300,000 global buyers. During the event, several key alliances were announced. For example, Cree partnered with Ishida to introduce the world’s first LED-specific light source designed for automotive use, which will be integrated into Esda’s lamp modules. At the same time, Guangzhou Zhengao Electronics launched seven new products and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Ronda.
Additionally, OSRAM is forming a joint venture with Continental to develop automotive lighting solutions, targeting the mainland's vehicle supply chain. The partnership is expected to start in early 2018, with around 1,500 employees and projected sales of 200–300 million euros annually. Although Ronda maintains a low profile, it has committed to shipping over 2 million CORE series products to Zhengao Electronics in the next 10 months, with deliveries beginning in July.
Ronda is also set to launch a new warm white CSP LED headlight component in the third quarter. This product offers high luminous efficiency, brightness, and heat resistance, making it suitable for fog lights and turn signals in the Japanese aftermarket. The CORE series has already been adopted by leading automotive lighting suppliers in China and includes three-, four-, and six-crystal package components ideal for LED lamp applications.
The ceramic substrate used in these products, combined with Ronda’s self-developed flip chip technology and patented phosphor coating, allows for an efficient linear light source that can be used in replacement headlight systems. Ronda is actively pursuing opportunities in the Chinese automotive market.
Su Feng, Chairman of Ronda, emphasized that the automotive LED market requires long-term development, especially due to the lengthy certification process for automotive components. Currently, LED headlights are being supplied to the aftermarket, with some customers already receiving small shipments and conducting trials. As customer demand grows, Ronda expects a steady increase in LED headlight orders in the future. The company also anticipates that emerging sectors like automotive and infrared lighting will contribute up to 20% of its revenue.
In the first half of 2017, Ronda’s performance was relatively stable, but revenue dipped by 3.5% in the second quarter compared to the first, and overall revenue for the year was 11% lower than the same period in 2016. This was attributed to internal restructuring and product changes, which slowed down the growth momentum.
In summary, the LED manufacturing competition has reached the automotive market, and the race is just beginning. With ongoing innovations, strategic collaborations, and increasing demand, the future of automotive lighting looks brighter than ever. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving industry.
