The function of a precision ceramic electronic density meter:

This device is designed to measure the overall density, open porosity, water absorption, and apparent specific gravity of ceramic materials directly. It can also estimate closed porosity indirectly through precise calculations.

There are two primary methods used to determine the bulk density of ceramics after sintering: the boiling method and the saturation method.

Boiling Method:

1. The sample is first placed in a furnace at 150°C to remove moisture from its pores. This step helps speed up the drying process and ensures all internal moisture is eliminated. After drying, the weight is recorded as W1.

2-1. Boil deionized water and submerge the sample for 30 minutes, ensuring it sinks completely beneath the surface without touching the bottom or sides. Then cool the sample in water for one hour. This is a simplified version of the process.

2-2. Alternatively, the sample can be boiled in water for 5 hours and then cooled in water for 24 hours to ensure full saturation.

3. Once the sample has absorbed water, gently dry the surface and record the weight as W2.

4. Weigh the sample while it is submerged in water to get the weight in water, which is recorded as W3.

5. Finally, measure the weight of the dry sample (W1) and use these values to calculate the density.

Saturation Method:

1. Remove any external burrs or powder from the sintered sample and weigh the dry sample as W1.

2. Place the sample into a water tank inside an automatic vacuum extractor filled with deionized water. Apply vacuum to allow the sample to absorb water until fully saturated.

3. After saturation, wipe off excess water from the surface and record the weight as W2.

4. Submerge the sample in water again and measure its weight as W3.

5. Using these measurements, you can determine the density of the ceramic material.

A precision ceramic electronic hydrometer allows for direct and accurate measurement of the density of ceramics after sintering, making the process more efficient and reliable.
