Industrial robots bring flexibility to laser welding technology

At the Innova Training Center in Laitila, Finland, there is one of the most advanced and flexible laser welding units in Europe. KUKA Roboter GmbH, the company's system partner KineRobotSolutions and the Innova Training Center combine experience and high-tech to create the high-tech laser welding unit "InnovaLasepro".

KUKA robots can work independently, with the positioning table or as a team to process very large parts. Whether laser welding or laser hybrid welding technology, all processes are monitored by camera.

Innova continues to receive research missions from a variety of industries, many of which come from the Navy shipbuilding industry. The parts required for this industry are often extremely heavy, and traditional equipment simply cannot handle these parts.

Implementation measures / solutions

The KUKA KR30HA is mounted upside down on the KUKA linear axis, which has a stroke of up to ten meters. This is a special KUKA device; like the robot, the device is optimized for accuracy.

KR30HA, HA stands for "highaccuracy" ("high precision"), designed to meet high precision requirements, especially for laser applications or for measuring part size. The robot and the linear axis have only an error of plus or minus 0.20 mm.

The KUKA KR210 is responsible for the transfer of parts and it works in conjunction with the KR30HA team. The technology, named KUKA RoboTeam, helps robots work together through real-time data exchange. This technology consciously abandons the use of inflexible control blocks, and uses intelligently networked autonomous standard control devices; the control devices can be freely combined, so the best robot team can be built for each production solution. The control system of each robot can be combined in any desired configuration. In addition, the KUKA 2000 can also be used to machine parts up to two and a half meters in diameter and weighing up to two tons. The welded unit walls and ceilings can be opened automatically so that large parts can be transported by crane to the welding unit.

System component / contract range

Several technical feature packages have been designed in the device: KUKA.LaserTec and KUKA.LaserhybridTec. In addition to Apricon's laser system (using Trumpf's laser), the unit is equipped with the welding heads from Cloos and Precitec and the three-dimensional cutting head from Precitec. The entire unit consists of a robot, a rotary dump, a linear axis, a laser and peripherals, controlled and coordinated by the KUKA KRC2.

Results/effectiveness

This device provides a flexible, innovative solution for laser welding of large components.
