In early 2018, the wireless VR accessories market showed a lot of potential, but only one real solution emerged so far—HTC Vive's TPCast. However, this solution doesn't rely on WiGig technology, making it a fully proprietary system with limited device compatibility. While it works for some users, long-term success in the VR industry will depend on cross-platform support and open standards.
On the other hand, several major companies such as AMD, Intel, Peraso, and Qualcomm have been working on WiGig chips specifically designed for wireless VR applications. These chips are still in development and haven't hit the market yet. Initially, there was hope that products using WiGig would be available by the end of 2018, but some sources like UploadVR now believe the release might be pushed into 2019.
By the second half of 2018, we can expect to see a growing number of VR companies shifting toward wireless solutions. This transition is a significant step forward for the industry, as it addresses one of the biggest barriers to widespread VR adoption—cable constraints. Wireless VR offers greater freedom and mobility, which could lead to more immersive experiences and broader consumer appeal.
Although no company has officially announced a specific product launch date, many are expected to reveal more details at the 2018 CES in January. This event could be a key milestone for the wireless VR industry.
While wireless technology holds great promise for solving many of VR’s challenges, it also comes with its own set of technical hurdles. One of the main issues is maintaining high display resolution while transmitting data wirelessly. Current WiGig solutions operating at 60 GHz face limitations in bandwidth and latency, making it harder to deliver smooth and high-quality VR experiences. Overcoming these challenges will be crucial for the future of wireless VR.
