Earlier this year, the wireless VR accessories market showed a lot of potential, but so far, only one real solution has emerged: HTC Vive's TPCast. However, TPCast doesn't use WiGig technology, making it a fully proprietary system with limited device compatibility. While it works well for its intended use case, in the long run, we need more cross-platform support to ensure that users can easily connect different devices without restrictions.
On the other hand, several major tech companies like AMD, Intel, Peraso, and Qualcomm have been working on WiGig chips specifically designed for wireless VR applications. These solutions aim to provide a more open and standardized approach. Unfortunately, these products are still not available on the market. The initial expectation was that they would hit shelves in the fourth quarter of this year, but some foreign media outlets, such as UploadVR, now believe the release might be pushed back to 2018.
By the second half of 2018, it’s expected that most of the VR industry will begin transitioning toward wireless solutions. This shift could mark a significant milestone for the industry, as it would help overcome one of the biggest barriers to widespread adoption—cable limitations and mobility issues.
Although no company has officially announced specific product launch dates yet, many expect that the upcoming CES 2018 event in January will bring more clarity and updates on these developments.
Wireless technology holds great promise for solving key challenges in VR, such as improving user freedom and reducing physical constraints. However, it also comes with its own set of technical hurdles. One of the main challenges is increasing display resolution while maintaining low latency and high bandwidth. Current WiGig solutions operating at 60 GHz are still in their early stages, and there's a lot of work to be done before they become reliable and widely adopted in consumer-grade VR systems.
