Xichang Bohai Wetland is a crucial component of the ecological safety barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. It serves as a provincial science popularization base that combines ecological restoration, tourism, and science education. The wetland stands out for its unique advantages and strong demonstration effects in promoting public understanding of environmental protection and science. The Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Department, Liangshan Prefecture, and the Xichang Municipal Party Committee and Government have placed great emphasis on establishing this provincial science popularization demonstration base. They have adopted a collaborative approach, involving provinces and cities, linking schools and research institutions, leveraging technological support, and encouraging interaction between science and tourism. Efforts are underway to upgrade existing science facilities. By combining the strengths of Xichang Aerospace Science & Technology City with the cultural characteristics of the ethnic region, a comprehensive plan has been developed to build high-standard science education venues. This includes optimizing the layout of wetland education centers, photo and film exhibition halls, and gradually constructing specialized science museums focused on birds, fish, and aquatic plants. These spaces now incorporate elements such as aerospace technology, astronomy, and local Dong ethnic customs, enhancing the overall science service function of the Bohai Wetland. To improve the quality of science exhibitions, modern technologies like multimedia, virtual reality, and interactive systems are being introduced. Digital collections and immersive scenes are being developed, including theme-based virtual museums and experience zones. These initiatives offer diverse learning experiences, from observation and exploration to hands-on experiments, allowing the public to engage with the wetland's natural beauty up close. The use of new media platforms like WeChat and mobile apps has also been strengthened to boost the appeal of science-related activities. Another key focus is expanding the role of the wetland in science education. Encouraging participation from scientific professionals, college students, and conservation groups, various volunteer organizations have been established to support science outreach efforts. Training programs for both full-time and part-time staff aim to enhance their capabilities and enrich the talent pool in science education. Regular science promotion events are held, aligned with major themes such as “Three Popular Science Activities,” “National Science and Technology Day,” “World Wetland Day,” and “Earth Day.” These include lectures on wetland conservation and guided tours, significantly improving the level of wetland protection and science education at Bohai National Wetland Park. Currently, the total area of science display within the Bohai Wetland covers 3.71 million square meters. A dedicated science popularization team has been formed, consisting of 9 full-time instructors, 45 part-time personnel, and 463 volunteers. This team plays a vital role in delivering impactful science education and promoting the integration of ecological awareness with ecotourism.
