Samsung wants to expand its AP business and seize the Chinese mobile phone maker market pie

By World Wide Web Reporter Zhang Zhiying – According to foreign media reports, Samsung Electronics is making a strong push to challenge Qualcomm's long-standing dominance as the leading manufacturer of application processors (APs) in the global market. The South Korean tech giant has been actively expanding its sales channels in China, successfully introducing its own Exynos chips to several Chinese smartphone manufacturers.

Exynos Chip

As reported by Business Korea on the 21st, Meizu recently launched the M6s smartphone, which features the Samsung Exynos 7872 AP. This chip is built on a 14nm FinFET process, offering download speeds of up to 300 Mbps and upload speeds of 150 Mbps. The integration of Samsung’s chip into a popular Chinese brand marks a significant step for the company in its efforts to expand beyond its own devices.

A source from the industry revealed that Samsung not only uses its own APs in its smartphones but is also actively supplying them to major Chinese manufacturers like Meizu. While specific names are not disclosed, it is known that Samsung has become a key supplier to many Chinese brands through its Exynos lineup. In addition to Meizu, companies such as ZTE and Lenovo have also adopted Exynos-based APs in their devices.

Samsung is clearly ambitious in its AP business strategy. Recently, the company launched the high-performance Exynos 9810, utilizing the latest second-generation 10-nanometer manufacturing process. This move highlights Samsung’s commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving mobile processor market.

According to Counterpoint Research, in the third quarter of last year, the global smartphone AP market share was dominated by Qualcomm with 42%, followed by Apple at 20%, MediaTek at 14%, Samsung at 11%, and HiSilicon at 8%. As Samsung continues to invest in its AP technology and broaden its partnerships, it may soon challenge the top positions in the market.
