By Zhang Zhiying, World Wide Web Reporter – According to recent foreign media reports, Samsung Electronics is making a strong push to challenge Qualcomm's long-standing dominance in the global AP (Application Processor) market. The company has been actively expanding its sales channels in China and has successfully introduced its own Exynos processors to several Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
As reported by Business Korea on the 21st, Meizu recently launched the M6s smartphone, which features Samsung’s Exynos 7872 AP. This chip is built on a 14nm FinFET process and offers download speeds of up to 300 Mbps and upload speeds of 150 Mbps. The inclusion of this processor marks a significant step for Samsung in securing partnerships with Chinese brands.
A source from the industry revealed that Samsung not only uses its own APs in its smartphones but is also actively supplying them to major Chinese manufacturers like Meizu. While specific names are not disclosed, it is known that Samsung has become a key supplier through its Exynos lineup. In addition to Meizu, companies such as ZTE and Lenovo have also adopted Exynos-based chips. Samsung is further pushing its AP business by launching high-performance models like the Exynos 9810, which utilizes the cutting-edge second-generation 10nm process technology.
According to data from Counterpoint Research, in the third quarter of last year, the global smartphone AP market was dominated by Qualcomm with a 42% share, followed by Apple at 20%, MediaTek at 14%, Samsung at 11%, and HiSilicon at 8%. This highlights the competitive landscape, but Samsung's growing presence in both domestic and international markets suggests it is steadily gaining ground.
With its continued investment in R&D and strategic partnerships, Samsung seems determined to carve out a stronger position in the AP sector, potentially reshaping the future of mobile chip manufacturing.
