Samsung Electronics launched a fresh round of marketing on Tuesday, taking aim at its main competitor, LG, by criticizing the suitability of OLED technology for television panels. At the same time, the company highlighted its own QLED (Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diode) technology as a superior alternative.
When it comes to next-generation TV panel technology, both Samsung and LG have their own strengths. Samsung is pushing QLED, while LG remains committed to OLED. In its latest statement, Samsung claimed that OLED suffers from a critical issue—burn-in. According to the company, this makes OLED unsuitable for TVs, which are expected to last much longer than smartphones.
Samsung explained that the organic materials used in OLED panels degrade over time, similar to how fruit oxidizes. In contrast, QLED technology uses semiconductor nanocrystals, which are more durable and better suited for long-term use in televisions.
Additionally, OLED TVs are currently in short supply and come with a high price tag. Ross Young, CEO of DSCC, a display research firm, has predicted that QLED will become the dominant technology in the next generation of TVs due to limited OLED production capacity from LG Display and the potential for lower prices.
While LG hasn't directly responded to Samsung’s claims, the company emphasized that OLED TVs rank first in consumer preference across 11 countries, highlighting their market competitiveness.
As the battle between QLED and OLED continues, consumers are left to decide which technology offers the best value and performance for their home entertainment needs.
