STMicroelectronics Introduces New Super-Junction MOSFET and World's First 1500V TO-220FP Wide Crawler-Position Package Power Transistor

STMicroelectronics, a leading global semiconductor supplier, has introduced a groundbreaking power transistor package known as the TO-220 FullPAK (TO-220FP), featuring an extended creepage distance. This innovative design includes the world’s first 1500V super-junction MOSFET, offering enhanced performance and reliability for a wide range of electronic applications.

Traditional power transistors used in devices like TVs and PCs often face challenges with dust accumulation on open power surfaces, which can lead to dangerous high-voltage arc discharges between the pins. The TO-220FP package addresses this issue by increasing the lead pitch from the standard 2.54mm to 4.25mm, significantly reducing the risk of arcing without the need for additional protective measures such as potting or sealing. This improvement not only enhances safety but also streamlines the manufacturing process, boosting efficiency and productivity.

Beyond its superior arc protection, the TO-220FP retains the excellent electrical performance of the widely used TO-220FP package. Its similar form factor ensures compatibility with existing installation processes, making it easier for manufacturers to integrate into their systems without major changes.

This new package is the result of close collaboration between STMicroelectronics and SoluM, a renowned South Korean power supply manufacturer. SoluM is leveraging this advanced packaging solution to develop more robust and cost-effective power solutions that outperform competitors in both performance and value.

Currently, STMicroelectronics’ TO-220FP wide creepage power transistors are in the final stages of mass production preparation. They are being used by a global top-tier TV manufacturer to develop next-generation products. The new family includes four fully qualified 600V low RDS(ON) MDmesh™ M2 MOSFETs with current ratings ranging from 8A to 34A. Additionally, the 1500V STFH12N150K5 and 1200V STFH12N120K5 MDmesh K5 devices are expected to undergo certification tests before the end of Q3 2016, marking a significant milestone in power electronics innovation.
