Although the actual deployment of drones may still be years away, cutting-edge technologies like autonomous driving have already become a key focus in the "second half" of the shared mobility industry. At a recent strategic conference, UCAR announced its transformation from a travel company into an automotive lifestyle platform, preparing for a future shift toward a driverless operation model.
Lu Zhengyao, chairman and CEO of UCAR, stated that while fully autonomous driving won’t eliminate private cars, the share of car-sharing will steadily grow. The platform aims to leverage big data and real-world usage scenarios, engaging in R&D, investment, and partnerships to deeply integrate into the autonomous driving ecosystem.
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, autonomous driving has emerged as a major focus for leading internet platforms. In 2015, Shenzhou Special Vehicle established a lab in Silicon Valley to explore self-driving technology. Today, UCAR Zhinao has developed an advanced driver assistance system and is currently testing it on select vehicles.
It’s not just China—global players like Uber and domestic drone companies are also entering the autonomous vehicle space. Recently, Volvo announced plans to supply Uber with 24,000 autonomous vehicles between 2019 and 2021, marking Uber’s largest procurement deal ever. Dripper founder Cheng Wei also mentioned that drone technology is one of the key areas being explored by his company, aiming to help drivers and car owners transition from ride-sharing to direct vehicle dispatch.
Beyond autonomous vehicles, travel platforms are expanding into broader mobility Solutions. Lu Zhengyao highlighted that, based on China’s transportation resources, many regions will face a growing number of “car-less†communities in the future. To address this, UCAR is repositioning itself as an automotive lifestyle platform, offering full-service solutions—from car sharing and suppliers to vehicle financing and insurance. This shift reflects a more comprehensive approach to mobility and car ownership in the evolving landscape of transportation.
