Although the full implementation of drone technology may still be years away, cutting-edge innovations like autonomous driving have already become a key battleground in the "second half" of the shared mobility industry. At a recent strategic conference, UCAR announced its transformation from a travel company into an automotive lifestyle platform, preparing for a future where driverless operations will dominate.
Lu Zhengyao, CEO and Chairman of UCAR, emphasized that while fully autonomous vehicles won’t eliminate private car ownership, the share of car-sharing services is expected to grow significantly. The platform plans to leverage big data and real-world usage scenarios, combining internal R&D with investments and partnerships to deeply engage in the development of autonomous driving technology.
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, self-driving technology has become a major focus for leading internet platforms. In fact, Shenzhou Special Vehicle began exploring autonomous driving as early as 2015 by establishing a research lab in Silicon Valley. Today, UCAR Zhinao has developed an advanced driver assistance system and is currently testing it on select vehicles.
This trend isn’t limited to China. Domestic companies like Dripper and international players such as Uber are also entering the autonomous vehicle space. Recently, Volvo Cars announced a major deal with Uber, pledging to supply 24,000 autonomous vehicles between 2019 and 2021—the largest order in Uber’s history. Meanwhile, Dripper’s founder, Cheng Wei, mentioned that autonomous vehicles are one of the key areas being explored by the company, aiming to help drivers and car owners transition from ride-sharing models to direct vehicle dispatching in the future.
Beyond autonomous vehicles, travel platforms are also expanding their reach beyond traditional ride-hailing. Lu Zhengyao highlighted that, based on China’s transportation resources, there will be many “hometowns†without cars in the future. To address this, UCAR has rebranded itself as an automotive lifestyle platform, offering end-to-end services—from car sharing and suppliers to vehicle financing and insurance.
