In domestic serum production, blood collection points are widely spread, and most samples are collected immediately by butchers, resulting in minimal hemolysis. This leads to a bright, waxy yellow color. It's worth noting that true fetal bovine serum (FBS) is rarely available domestically. Imported serum, on the other hand, tends to be more hemolyzed because of its weaker coagulation properties, making red blood cells more prone to rupture.
Generally, domestically produced serum appears slightly yellowish, while high-quality imported serum, such as Gibco 16000, shows a deeper yellow or even reddish hue—almost orange-red. However, heat-inactivated serum or serum that has been improperly stored may show dark red or brown discoloration due to hemoglobin degradation.
