According to recent foreign media reports, Samsung Electronics has announced plans to establish a new artificial intelligence (AI) research center, aiming to drive innovation and explore emerging business opportunities across its core sectors. The company also emphasized enhancing the role of its Chief Strategy Officer, Young Sohn, to lead strategic initiatives and support long-term growth.
In a statement, Samsung mentioned that this move is part of a broader restructuring effort designed to "rapidly adapt to evolving market conditions." This adjustment reflects the company's commitment to staying competitive in an increasingly tech-driven landscape, particularly as it seeks to integrate AI into its existing product lines and services.
The leadership vacuum left after the arrest of Jay Y. Lee, the vice chairman of Samsung, had raised concerns about the company’s future direction. However, last month, Samsung appointed a new leadership team, which helped restore confidence in its management structure and ensured continuity in decision-making.
The newly established AI Research Center will serve as a collaborative hub for Samsung’s mobile and consumer electronics divisions, two of the company’s key business areas. While the exact location of the center has not been disclosed, its focus on cross-departmental innovation suggests a strong emphasis on internal collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Young Sohn, who has been instrumental in driving Samsung’s strategic vision, has taken on additional responsibilities in business development. His role now includes exploring new revenue streams beyond traditional hardware, such as software solutions, accessories, and digital services. This shift highlights Samsung’s growing interest in diversifying its offerings and expanding into more integrated ecosystems.
Sohn previously led Samsung’s $8 billion acquisition of Harman International, a major move that strengthened the company’s position in the automotive and audio industries. As head of the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC), he oversees operations in multiple global locations, including San Jose and San Francisco, further reinforcing Samsung’s international innovation footprint.
