On March 14, the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision released the results of a random inspection targeting four types of consumer products: air purifiers, water purifiers, car air purifiers, and air humidifiers. The report exposed several unqualified products that failed to meet hygiene and safety standards. According to a report by Modern Express, one particular water purifier from Zhongshan Jiajiale Electric Co., Ltd. was found to have a total colony count over ten times the acceptable limit, making its purified water less clean than tap water itself.
The inspection involved 36 batches of water purifiers, with 28 passing the tests, resulting in a pass rate of 77.8%. Liu Tingji, director of the Light Industry Office at the Lianyungang Quality and Technical Comprehensive Inspection and Testing Center, explained that six batches failed the hygiene test, specifically the total colony count. Among them, the water purifier from Zhongshan Jiajiale Electric Co., Ltd. had the highest recorded value of 1080 CFU/ml, which is 10.8 times above the standard limit. This alarming result suggests that the water it produces may be more contaminated than the original tap water it's meant to purify.
Liu also advised consumers to choose water purifiers based on their local water hardness. In regions with high mineral content, such as northern China, reverse osmosis purifiers are recommended to remove most impurities. For areas where retaining some minerals is preferred, other types of purifiers that filter out contaminants like suspended solids and heavy metals while preserving essential minerals are suggested.
In addition to water purifiers, the inspection also covered 55 batches of air purifiers, with 47 passing, giving a pass rate of 85.5%. The main issues found were related to labeling, power input, cord connections, and noise levels. Meanwhile, 39 batches of vehicle air purifiers were tested, with 28 passing—resulting in a 71.8% pass rate. The air humidifier category saw 27 batches tested, and 25 passed the inspection.
These findings highlight the importance of regular quality checks and informed consumer choices when selecting home appliances. With increasing awareness of product safety, it's crucial for buyers to pay attention to certifications and performance metrics before making a purchase.
