On March 14, the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision announced the results of a random inspection targeting four types of household appliances: air purifiers, water purifiers, car air purifiers, and air humidifiers. The report revealed several products that failed to meet hygiene and safety standards. According to Modern Express, one water purifier produced by Zhongshan Jiajiale Electric Co., Ltd. was found to have an alarming level of bacterial contamination, with total colony counts exceeding 10 times the acceptable limit—making its purified water less clean than tap water.
A total of 36 batches of water purifiers were tested, and 28 passed the inspection, resulting in a pass rate of 77.8%. Liu Tingji, director of the Light Industry Office at Lianyungang Quality and Technical Comprehensive Inspection and Testing Center, explained that six batches failed due to high levels of microbial contamination. Among them, the water purifier from Zhongshan Jiajiale had the highest reading of 1,080 CFU/ml, which is 10.8 times above the allowed standard. This shocking result highlights a serious issue with product quality and consumer safety.
Liu also advised consumers to choose water purifiers based on their local water hardness. In areas with hard water, such as northern China, it's recommended to use reverse osmosis purifiers that remove most impurities. For regions with softer water, other types of purifiers that retain beneficial minerals while filtering out contaminants like heavy metals and suspended particles are more suitable.
In addition to water purifiers, the inspection covered 55 batches of air purifiers, with 47 passing the test—giving a pass rate of 85.5%. The main issues found were related to labeling, power consumption, electrical connections, and noise levels. Meanwhile, 39 vehicle air purifiers were tested, and only 28 passed, resulting in a 71.8% pass rate. For air humidifiers, 27 batches were checked, and 25 were found to be compliant.
This comprehensive inspection underscores the importance of quality control in consumer electronics, especially those that directly impact health and well-being. As consumers become more aware of product safety, manufacturers must ensure that their devices meet all necessary standards to protect public health.
