On December 21st, Baidu and Huawei announced a comprehensive strategic partnership aimed at strengthening their positions in the AI-driven future. The collaboration focuses on enhancing user experiences in China by integrating artificial intelligence across multiple platforms, including natural interaction, open AI ecosystems, content services, and smart devices.
The cooperation involves leveraging Huawei’s HiAI platform and Baidu’s PaddlePaddle deep learning framework to build an open AI ecosystem that supports developers and enriches smart applications. Both companies will also deepen their efforts in voice and image recognition across various smart terminals to improve human-computer interaction. Additionally, they plan to develop an augmented reality (AR) ecosystem through a combination of software and hardware innovation.
In terms of internet services and content, the two firms will work closely on search and information flow, aiming to deliver more personalized and efficient user experiences. Robin Li, CEO of Baidu, emphasized that the partnership is natural given the shared technical strengths and similar corporate cultures—both are known for their “wolf-like†drive and long-term commitment to innovation.
Li Yanhong, co-founder of Baidu, highlighted that the integration of mobile phones and AI is a powerful combination, comparing it to "heavenly flowers blooming" that will eventually take root and bear fruit. From Huawei’s perspective, the collaboration aligns with its vision of moving beyond hardware to offer a more intelligent user experience. As Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business, noted, smartphones are no longer just devices—they are becoming intelligent assistants, and the future of the industry will belong to those who can deliver seamless AI integration.
Baidu sees this partnership as a key step in its All-in-AI strategy, aiming to bring AI closer to end-users. Since 2016, Baidu has been heavily investing in AI, redefining itself as an AI company. While AI is still in its early stages, Baidu has been working to integrate it into core products and create real-world applications.
Huawei, with its strong presence in the global smartphone market, offers Baidu a valuable platform to expand its AI reach. According to IDC data, Huawei shipped 39.1 million smartphones in Q3 2017, capturing 10.5% of the market. Though it still trails behind Samsung and Apple, Huawei has shown consistent growth and is now focusing on improving user experience and profitability.
As the mobile phone industry becomes increasingly competitive, Huawei is looking to differentiate itself through AI and strategic partnerships. With Baidu’s leadership in AI, the collaboration is expected to drive innovation and help both companies secure a stronger position in the evolving tech landscape.
