4G users will break 700 million next year, China Mobile launches 5G scale test

At the 2017 China Mobile Global Partnership Conference, Chairman Shang Bing emphasized that the company has fully embraced the “big connection” strategy, driving integration through four key areas—equipment, terminals, chips, and content. This approach has enabled China Mobile to consistently outperform industry growth rates in revenue. Shang also highlighted the importance of open collaboration across the industry chain. By working closely with upstream and downstream partners, China Mobile is optimizing cooperation models, enhancing resource support, and leading the development of 4G and IoT technologies. The company has established multiple industrial alliances, including 5G joint venture centers, digital home initiatives, and IoT platforms, all aimed at fostering a more connected ecosystem. In addition, China Mobile has launched an open platform designed to support communication capabilities, IoT, the internet, business services, digital content, and smart homes. These efforts reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and partnership. China Mobile announced that its 5G network is currently in the technical trial phase, with large-scale trials planned for the following year. A pre-commercial rollout is expected in 2019, followed by full commercial deployment in 2020. To better meet customer needs, the company is also rethinking its profit model, such as reviving the Fetion service and increasing data promotions. With over 600 million 4G users, China Mobile is well-positioned to capitalize on this growing base. At the ongoing conference, Tsao Jiao noted that mobile user numbers have reached 880 million, including 620 million 4G users. The company expects to surpass 700 million 4G users this year. From a strategic perspective, China Mobile aims to strengthen its leadership in mobile networks, build a top-tier home broadband brand, and ensure continuous NB-IoT coverage across 346 cities. It is also accelerating the maturity of 5G technology and planning for commercial scale by 2020, providing strong network support for digital transformation. Regarding cost reductions, China Mobile has already cut mobile internet tariffs by 68% and eliminated domestic long-distance roaming charges. The company plans to continue lowering costs to better serve its customers. Interestingly, the 5G timeline remains consistent: technical trials this year, large-scale testing next year, pre-commercial use in 2019, and full commercialization in 2020. As of now, China Mobile operates 3.23 million mobile base stations, including 1.79 million 4G sites. It serves 880 million mobile users, with 71% using 4G. The number of 4G users is expected to reach 800 million next year. Home broadband subscriptions have exceeded 100 million, and the company has more than 200 million IoT connections, showing its expanding digital footprint.
