Sony will resume epicenter battery factory production on the 22nd

Sony Press spokesman Hiroshi Okubo said yesterday that the company plans to resume its rechargeable battery production plant in Tochigi, northern Japan, on March 22. The earthquake and tsunami on March 11 caused Sony to close 10 production plants in the earthquake zone. The battery production plant will be the third company to resume production after the earthquake in Japan.

Okubo said the company may also resume production of its DVD factory in Ibaraki County within a week.

As Japan's largest exporter of consumer electronics products, Sony has resumed the operation of two other production plants last week to minimize the loss to the company caused by the decline in capacity caused by the closure of the factory. However, the company’s four factories in Miyagi are still closed. The products produced at the four factories include Blu-ray discs and semiconductor lasers. The company’s two rechargeable battery factories in Fukushima Prefecture are still shut down.

Okubo said that in the earthquake and tsunami that took place, Sony’s production plant in Tagajo, Miyagi Prefecture, suffered the most damage. The factory is mainly responsible for the production of tape coating materials, mobile device touch screens and Blu-ray discs. Okubo stated that some of the plant’s facilities are still covered by rubble and mud.
