Official Exposure of China Space Station: Up to 6 Astronauts

At the grand opening of the first-ever astronaut photography exhibition on July 26th, Yang Liwei, the deputy director of the Astronautics Heroes and Manned Space Engineering Office, shared some exciting news. He announced that China plans to initiate the recruitment process for its third batch of astronauts this year. What sets this round apart is that the focus will shift toward selecting engineers and researchers with strong technical backgrounds. These individuals will play a crucial role in future missions, handling essential tasks such as maintaining, repairing, assembling, and even performing extravehicular activities aboard space stations and spacecraft. China's ambitious manned space station project is set to be fully constructed and operational around 2022. Once complete, it will host large-scale scientific experiments and cutting-edge technological trials. Astronauts stationed there will experience longer stays—up to three to six months—during which they'll carry out numerous scientific experiments alongside vital maintenance and repair duties. This extended stay demands enhanced knowledge and rigorous training for the astronauts involved. The basic structure of the space station consists of a central module paired with two experimental modules, each exceeding 20 tons in weight. This T-shaped configuration supports a crew of three, expandable to six during crew rotations. The core module features five docking ports designed to connect with cargo ships, manned spacecraft, and experimental modules, along with an airlock for astronauts to exit the station. Equipped with state-of-the-art scientific experiment cabinets featuring international standards, the space station will facilitate diverse research opportunities across multiple disciplines. Key areas include space life sciences, biotechnology, microgravity fluid dynamics, combustion science, materials science, and fundamental physics. Yang Liwei has previously mentioned that over four manned missions are planned during the construction phase of the space station. Additionally, China is developing a powerful space telescope with a 2-meter aperture capable of conducting extensive imaging and comprehensive spectral surveys.
