In most people's minds, streetlights are often associated only with their primary purpose of providing light. However, have you ever encountered a smart streetlight that can offer free Wi-Fi, charge electric cars, e-bikes, and even mobile phones? In Nanning, these intelligent streetlights, equipped with features like video surveillance, voice broadcasting, free Wi-Fi, help alarms, free charging, information posting, interactive advertising, air quality monitoring, parking space tracking, and manhole cover monitoring, have already set a precedent and are now operational.
　
The Introduction of the First Wisdom Street Lamp Pole
On the afternoon of August 29th, amidst light rain, the head of the street lighting management office at the Nanning City Urban Management Bureau was installing a unique 11-meter-tall streetlight pole. On its larger side, about 5 meters up, there were several small touch screens beneath it, drawing curious crowds who stopped to watch the rain while observing its various functions, such as charging, information querying, and alarms. Zhou Hongchun, Chief of the Technical Management Section of the Lighting Department at the Urban Management Bureau, stated that this light pole is the first smart streetlight pole in Nanning. It also features video surveillance, voice broadcasting, free Wi-Fi, help alarms, free charging, information posting, interactive advertising, air quality monitoring, parking space tracking, and manhole cover monitoring. Additionally, the smart streetlight can serve as an access point for the power grid and the internet, offering simple power and network rental services.
At the beginning of July, the Lighting Management Office of the Municipal Urban Management Bureau began assembling components, setting up booms, installing modules, and conducting lighting tests for the smart streetlight pole. Yesterday, the smart streetlight pole was officially launched.
Can Be Lit Up and Charged on the Internet
Zhou Hongchun explained that the fundamental function of this smart streetlight project is still road lighting, combined with remote monitoring, automatic control, individual light control, and automatic alarm technologies.
So, what kind of services can the public enjoy from the smart streetlight pole? According to a live demonstration by Liu Dazhao, a technician from the smart streetlight pole manufacturer, for instance, free public Wi-Fi can cover an area of up to 50 meters around the pole. Users just need to search for the connection on their mobile phones and they can use it for free. The strength of the Wi-Fi signal depends on the number of users nearby. The smart streetlight also offers a charging function, capable of charging electric vehicles, motorcycles, and mobile phones. The charging time depends on the power output of the base of the light pole.
Furthermore, from a broader perspective, the smart streetlight can integrate wireless communication, cameras, voice broadcasting, LED displays, charging stations, parking space monitoring, environmental monitoring, manhole cover monitoring, and one-touch alarms into one device. Utilizing video intelligence analysis and big data analytics, it helps build a traffic management network to regulate traffic flow, detect violations, and manage traffic incidents; it establishes a public security network to monitor thefts and other illegal activities, assisting in crime-solving efforts; it creates an urban management supervision network to supervise littering, illegal road occupation, intelligent watering, waste removal, dust suppression, and more; it sets up an emergency command integration process, using emergency displays, LED screens, and voice broadcasts to guide evacuations, integrating video surveillance information to facilitate dispatching and commanding.
Not Yet Widely Promoted in Nanning
When will this high-tech smart streetlight be widely adopted in Nanning? When can Nanning residents start using it? Zhou Hongchun mentioned that many of the smart features of the smart streetlight poles are not yet accessible due to coordination required with various departments. For example, when installing charging stations for electric vehicles, it’s necessary to work with the traffic police department if the pole is placed in a parking area; for electric bike charging, there must be designated parking spaces, requiring coordination with the urban management department. Currently, there is no plan to roll out the poles en masse in Nanning. Various factors need to be considered. If the smart streetlight pole has 13 to 14 functions, the cost per pole is 100,000 yuan, compared to 10,000 yuan for a regular streetlight. Financial considerations are also a factor, and the poles could potentially be used in a socialized manner.
"However, based on the future trend of installing and arranging smart streetlight poles, they will primarily be installed in tourist attractions, commercial areas, and other high-traffic locations. Since cameras are mounted on the poles, they can monitor 24/7, allowing for constant observation of the surrounding security situation to prevent accidents like overcrowding or trampling."
It was reported that the pilot projects for smart streetlight poles have been rolled out nationwide, including in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. In Shanghai, they have been installed on multiple roads to provide essential power supply resources, develop communication networks, and contribute to the development of smart cities. This reduces material and engineering costs in the construction of power lines and support poles.
"The pilot installation of the first smart streetlight in Nanning is mainly intended to help Nanning citizens understand the development trend of municipal facilities," said Zhou Hongchun.

When driving, citizens can plan the optimal route by using the LED display on the smart streetlight pole.
In case of emergencies like getting lost or being robbed, pressing the alarm button will send the alarm information and location details directly to the management platform. Managers can observe the surroundings via the 360-degree camera feed, ensuring the safety of the person raising the alarm.

The smart streetlight uses LED streetlights as the illumination source. It also has features such as proactive fault alarms, lamp cable anti-theft, optimized maintenance suggestions, and energy-saving tips.
It can also quickly start up and adjust the illuminance value to achieve real-time dynamic energy savings. Intelligent control combines local and remote control to automatically turn the lights on or off based on time and weather conditions; it dynamically adjusts the brightness of the light source in real time, reducing illumination and saving energy when traffic flow and volume drop significantly.
3. Automatically Alarm for Abnormal Status
The smart streetlight has technologies and functions such as remote monitoring, automatic control, individual light control, and automatic alarms. For example, if the working state of the light pole becomes abnormal, or the voltage or current exceeds limits, the lamp lever controller will automatically trigger an alarm to the control platform. After receiving the alarm information, the control platform performs a preliminary analysis and then reports it to the manager. It collects operational data, monitoring data, and operational data in report form, analyzes electrical energy monitoring data, and provides recommendations for optimizing energy conservation.
4. Charge with Citizen Card
Since parking spaces next to the smart streetlight poles are limited, users need to make reservations or use the Nanning Citizen Card for charging.
