**I. Introduction**
The Mijia Universal Remote Control is the first product launched through Xiaomi's Smart Home App crowdfunding campaign. On July 13, 2015, Xiaomi Crowdfunds officially debuted on the app, and the first product was quickly snapped up within seconds. It became a hot topic in the smart home space. A friend once asked how to connect regular air conditioners to the Mijia App, and this universal remote control offers a solution. Not only can it control your air conditioner, but it also supports TVs, water heaters, fans, and other infrared-controlled devices.
**II. Unboxing**
This is a crowdfunding product that has gone through several optimization stages. The packaging is sleek and minimalist, with a two-layer design—top layer contains the main unit, while the bottom holds the charging cable and instructions.
The device features a high-end black finish with a simple and elegant design. Its surface uses a mirror-like piano paint finish, giving it a modern and tech-savvy look. It can be placed anywhere in the room and still looks great. The remote supports over 6,000 brands and various infrared devices like TVs, set-top boxes, speakers, projectors, fans, and more.
At the top of the unit is a QR code for linking to the Xiaomi Smart Home App. The charging cable is a USB-C type, supporting fast charging.
After peeling off the QR code sticker, you can see the mirror-paint shell with the Mi logo. The craftsmanship is impressive, with the logo carved using a concave technique.
The back has a frosted texture, offering a soft and smooth feel. There’s also a heat vent ring, allowing continuous operation 24/7 without overheating concerns.
It includes a reset port and a micro-USB interface. The housing is made from Sabic material, which reduces reflection and allows infrared signals to penetrate up to 88%. With 360-degree signal coverage, there are no blind spots, and the remote can control devices up to 20 meters away—perfect for most home sizes.
**III. Usage**
Once powered on, you can use the Xiaomi Smart Home App to pair the remote. It supports IEEE 802.11 b/g protocols, meaning it works with Wi-Fi networks.
With a Xiaomi router, you can connect in one step. For other routers, you’ll need to manually enter the Wi-Fi name and password. The Xiaomi router will prompt you to find and trust the device, and then you can see “Mijia Universal Remote Controller†in the app.
In the remote list, you can also add other devices like the Mijia box. There are three ways to add a remote: copy an existing remote, add manually, or search by model.
There are many types of devices supported, including those not listed. You can directly search for models like water heaters or TVs.
If you have a physical remote, you can copy its commands via the app. If you don’t know the model, just select the brand and match accordingly. This is similar to using an infrared-enabled phone.

Some basic settings include controlling power, channels, AC temperature, and more. It can also integrate with other smart home devices, such as motion sensors or switches, enabling automation and expanding functionality.
**IV. Experience**
The Mijia Universal Remote mainly supports infrared devices, allowing users to add them via model matching, interactive pairing, or copying commands. It supports over 6,000 brands and 80,000 local codes, plus 250,000 cloud codes. Almost all infrared devices are compatible and can be controlled through the Smart Home App. However, it doesn't support Wi-Fi-only remotes (only works with Mijia Box), nor does it support RF remotes. For example, my Hisense TV doesn’t work with it. While it's a good universal remote, it isn’t fully universal. I hope the next generation supports more control methods.
**V. Conclusion**
Despite being released years ago, this device remains affordable and practical for most users. In a single room, it can control all smart appliances, making it a worthwhile purchase. For multiple rooms, you may need more units. If you're into the Xiaomi Smart Home ecosystem, this small device is worth trying—it acts as a bridge to turn traditional infrared devices into smart ones, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing all your appliances.
