**World’s Largest Floating Solar Power Plant Unveiled in China**
A few days ago, a reporter from Global Network Technology learned from the official website of China Three Gorges Group that on December 10th, the 150MW floating photovoltaic project in Huainan, Anhui Province, officially connected to the grid and began generating electricity. This marks the world’s largest surface-floating solar power plant. The project is not only a milestone for China's solar industry but also a subject of interest in the U.S., as the global market closely watches the development of China's renewable energy sector.
The project is located in Panji District, a region that has faced environmental challenges due to coal mining activities. Over 84,000 mu of land have been submerged, creating ecological issues. By utilizing idle water surfaces in the subsidence area, the project transforms this problem into an opportunity, shifting from underground mining to clean energy production. It represents a move from “depletion†to “wealth,†and from “black†to “green†energy.
Once fully operational, the project will generate approximately 150 million kWh of clean electricity annually—equivalent to saving about 53,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 195,500 tons. This will meet the electricity needs of nearly 94,000 households.
Compared to traditional ground-mounted solar farms, floating photovoltaics offer several advantages: they don’t occupy land, reduce water evaporation, and inhibit algae growth by blocking sunlight. Additionally, the cooling effect of the water increases the efficiency of the panels by 5% to 10%.
According to Xiao Fuqin, deputy general manager and chief engineer at Huainan Sunshine Floating Buoy Technology Co., Ltd., the project uses over 160,000 solar panels installed on floating platforms. While the initial cost per kWh is higher (by 0.3 to 0.5 yuan), the increased efficiency makes the overall revenue comparable. More importantly, the project helps change international perceptions of China’s sustainable energy development.
Lu Zhong, chairman of China Three Gorges Group, emphasized the importance of building the project into a world-class, technologically advanced floating solar facility, setting new standards for the industry.
In another breakthrough, China has also launched the world’s first photovoltaic highway on the Jinan South Ring Expressway. This innovative road surface integrates solar panels that can charge electric vehicles while driving, marking a significant step toward smart, green infrastructure.
Industry experts highlight that China's photovoltaic industry has grown rapidly, leading the global market in both production and application. Despite challenges such as high costs and the need for more innovation, China is becoming the center of solar manufacturing and technology.
As the world looks toward a cleaner energy future, China’s advancements in solar power are not just impressive—they’re transformative.
