According to recent reports, Foxconn, one of Taiwan's leading foundries, is reportedly nearing a decision on whether to invest in the United States, with Wisconsin being a key contender. Industry insiders suggest that discussions could take place as early as this week in Washington regarding their ambitious investment plans in the U.S. market.
Sources familiar with the matter reveal that Foxconn is seriously considering setting up a facility in Wisconsin to produce large-size TV display panels. Should this investment come to fruition, it would mark another significant step by an Asian manufacturer to answer President Trump’s call for revitalizing American manufacturing, following in the footsteps of other companies bringing production back to the U.S.
Foxconn has already expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities across several U.S. states, including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. The total projected investment exceeds $10 billion, primarily focused on display panel production and related equipment. While Wisconsin remains a top candidate, Foxconn is also looking into the possibility of establishing a plant near Detroit. However, details about the specific products to be manufactured at this potential Detroit site remain unclear.
Despite these developments, no final decision has been reached, and there remains a possibility of changes right up until the last moment. Foxconn has indicated that they are planning to host events in both Washington and Wisconsin to present their broader investment strategy in the U.S. An email statement from Foxconn confirmed they are assessing a potential site for a new manufacturing plant in the U.S., though further specifics remain undisclosed.
Last month, Foxconn CEO Terry Gou mentioned plans to collaborate with Sharp in Japan to develop a U.S.-based plant. Foxconn acquired a majority stake in Sharp last year, and a spokesperson for Sharp chose not to comment on the matter. Gou has also held meetings with U.S. political figures to discuss the possibility of establishing such a factory. Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives representing southeast Wisconsin, confirmed he had met with Foxconn executives.
As the world's largest electronics manufacturer, Foxconn currently handles the assembly of products like iPhones and gaming consoles. Although some of their facilities in China have explored scaling up operations in the U.S., concrete steps have yet to be taken. In 2013, Foxconn announced plans to invest $40 million in research institutes in Pennsylvania. In 2014, Gou expressed interest in building a high-end display manufacturing plant in the U.S., citing logistical costs as a key factor. However, these initiatives have remained largely conceptual.
Foxconn is currently investing $8.8 billion in constructing a TV panel factory in Guangzhou, southern China, utilizing Sharp's technology to produce advanced LCD screens. If Foxconn proceeds with manufacturing panels in the U.S., they will need to secure potential clients or establish their own production lines.
This trend of Asian manufacturers expanding their presence in the U.S. is growing. Similarly, AM General, known for producing Hummers, sold their Indiana assembly plant to SF Motors, a Chinese-backed company, for $110 million.
