Convertible SUV? Volkswagen wants to get a convertible SUV! This sci-fi car actually only 120,000?

Volkswagen is globally recognized as a “people’s car” rather than a bus, thanks to its extensive market presence, including a strong foothold in the U.S. market through GM's former dominance. However, in China, Volkswagen seems to lag behind in the rapidly expanding SUV segment, particularly when competitors are launching 150,000-class luxury models. This leaves room for a more affordable SUV entry into the market. Recently, rumors have surfaced about Volkswagen developing a convertible SUV, a futuristic concept that sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie but could potentially sell for as low as 120,000 RMB. While T-ROC’s smaller SUV models have been teased abroad, their official release in China is slated for late 2018. Interestingly, T-Cross has been in development even before T-ROC. The latest news from SAIC Volkswagen suggests that the new T-Cross will draw inspiration from the T-Cross Breeze concept car. Despite sharing some design elements with the new Tiguan, the T-Cross appears far more avant-garde. Its production version will boast a striking sci-fi aesthetic, with the grille seamlessly integrated into the headlights, giving the front end a bold, dynamic appearance. In terms of design, the lower grille features a mesh pattern with a sleeker, more modern finish. A silver sports bumper adds a sporty touch, while the square-shaped daytime running lights add a touch of futurism. It remains unclear whether the final production model will retain these exact features, but the current design certainly looks promising. Critics might not rave about the rear styling, yet it’s far from conventional. Sharp lines define the contours, complemented by horizontally-oriented T-shaped taillights. The mesh-like lower panel echoes the front design, offering a fresh take compared to other domestic offerings. Inside, the T-Cross continues Volkswagen’s trend of embracing modern technology. The production version will feature an all-electronic gear shifter, a hallmark of contemporary designs. While the actual buttons and knobs will remain functional, the central console may incorporate a high-integration touch screen, paired with dual-tone color schemes. If this vehicle indeed launches at around 120,000 RMB in China, it could pose a significant challenge to local brands. This new model represents Volkswagen’s effort to regain ground in the fiercely competitive Chinese market. With its blend of futuristic design and accessible pricing, the T-Cross could redefine expectations for affordable SUVs in the region.
