According to recent reports, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., commonly known as Foxconn, a leading Taiwanese contract manufacturer, is reportedly nearing a decision on whether to invest in the United States, possibly as early as this week. The discussions are expected to take place in Washington, focusing on the company's potential investment plans in the U.S.
Sources familiar with the matter suggest that Foxconn is seriously considering manufacturing large-sized TV display panels in Wisconsin. Should this investment materialize, it would mark another significant step by an Asian manufacturer to establish a presence in the U.S., following in the footsteps of similar efforts by other companies under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has prioritized revitalizing American manufacturing.
Foxconn has previously expressed interest in investing over $10 billion across seven U.S. states, primarily targeting the production of display panels and related equipment. Last month, a senior executive from the company mentioned that they had already explored options in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. Besides Wisconsin, Foxconn is also exploring the possibility of setting up a facility near Detroit, although the exact nature of the products to be manufactured remains unclear.
Despite these developments, insiders note that no final decision has been reached, and there is still room for changes. Foxconn is reportedly planning to hold events in both Washington and Wisconsin to provide further details about their intended investment strategy in the U.S. In response to inquiries, Foxconn issued an email statement confirming that they are evaluating a potential site for a manufacturing plant in the U.S., but declined to offer specifics regarding timing or location.
Last month, Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou indicated that his company would collaborate with Sharp, a Japanese electronics giant in which Foxconn holds a majority stake, to explore opportunities for establishing a plant in the U.S. Sharp itself has remained tight-lipped about any such plans. Gou has also engaged with several U.S. political figures, including Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives representing southeastern Wisconsin, who has confirmed meeting with Foxconn representatives.
As the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, Foxconn plays a critical role in producing items like iPhones and gaming consoles. While previous expansion plans in the U.S. have often remained conceptual, this time seems different. For instance, in 2013, Foxconn announced intentions to invest $40 million in research institutes in Pennsylvania. Two years later, Gou discussed the idea of constructing a high-end display manufacturing facility in the U.S., citing logistical costs associated with shipping large TVs from Asia. However, these projects never came to fruition.
Currently, Foxconn is investing $8.8 billion in building a new TV panel factory in Guangzhou, China, utilizing Sharp’s advanced LCD technology. Given Sharp’s widespread use of display panels in various consumer electronics—from TVs to smartphones and car displays—it’s likely that Foxconn will need to either secure local clients or build its own foundry if it chooses to manufacture panels in the U.S.
Other Asian firms are also increasingly looking to boost production within the U.S. Recently, Samsung Electronics announced a $380 million expansion for its appliance manufacturing plant in South Carolina. Around the same time, AM General, the maker of Humvees, agreed to sell its Indiana assembly plant to SF Motors—a Chinese-backed electric vehicle startup—for $110 million. These moves underscore a broader trend among Asian companies aiming to tap into the growing American market while responding to geopolitical shifts and regulatory pressures.
