AI and human driving drone PK, AI lost

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become the subject of intense fascination, almost reaching mythical status. Many people see AI as a powerful force capable of doing anything. But is it truly all-powerful? While today’s AI systems are impressive, they are not infallible. AI has made significant strides in recent years, especially in areas like playing Go and processing large amounts of data, which have made humans feel a growing sense of uncertainty. The question arises: if we use AI to control a drone, would it perform better than a human pilot? To find out, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in collaboration with Google, recently organized a competition where AI faced off against a human drone pilot. The test setup was straightforward: a series of obstacle arches were placed in a lab, and both the AI and the human had to navigate through them as quickly as possible. The human pilot was Ken Loo, one of the top drone racers in the world. He wore an FPV (First Person View) headset to get a clearer perspective during the flight. Both the AI and Ken Loo had undergone some training before the challenge. The results showed that Ken Loo completed the course in 11.1 seconds, while the AI took 13.9 seconds. This outcome suggests that AI, despite its power, still struggles with tasks requiring creativity, such as route planning. However, NASA noted that AI demonstrated greater stability throughout the flight. Human pilots often take more risks to achieve faster times, while AI tends to be more consistent. Despite this loss, NASA remains optimistic about the future of AI in flight. They believe that AI will continue to improve rapidly and could one day surpass human pilots in speed and precision. Potential applications include mapping, search and rescue missions, and autonomous navigation for space station robots. While AI may not yet be the ultimate solution, its potential is undeniable—and the journey is just beginning.
