In recent times, IDC, a renowned research organization, has published a new report titled "IDC Future Perspective: Global Robots 2018 Forecast – Asia Pacific (excluding Japan)". This comprehensive study outlines key trends and future developments in the robotics industry across the region. The report highlights that the Asia-Pacific region is set to become the global leader in robot investment, with rapid technological advancements and widespread adoption expected over the next few years.
According to Jing Bing Zhang, Director of Global Robotics Research at IDC, "Beyond Japan, the Asia-Pacific region is witnessing remarkable growth in automation and robotics across nearly all industrial sectors—manufacturing, resources, healthcare, consumer goods, and more. These sectors are being reshaped, transformed, and kept competitive through robotic integration. IDC forecasts that robot spending in the region will grow significantly between 2017 and 2021, reaching $133 billion by 2021, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.4%. This will account for over 60% of the global robotics market by that time."
This growth rate outpaces the global average, which IDC previously projected to reach $218.4 billion by 2021, growing at a CAGR of around 25.4%. China, as the largest robotics market, is expected to represent more than 34% of the global total by 2021.
Jing Bing Zhang also discussed the evolution of robotics into what he calls "Robotics 3.0," an era characterized by embedded or cloud-based artificial intelligence. These intelligent robots offer features such as ubiquitous perception, networked entity convergence, autonomous management, and more human-like multi-modal interactions.
This transformation is already influencing both industrial and service robots, affecting both commercial and consumer applications. Leading robotics companies are now focusing on integrating AI into their product strategies to maintain a competitive edge.
Additionally, Dr. Jing Bing Zhang shared three of the top ten predictions from the report, emphasizing the opportunities and challenges these trends will bring to IT leaders in 2018 and beyond.
Prediction 1: By 2020, at least 40% of newly installed industrial robots in the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) market will feature predictive analytics, health awareness, self-diagnosis, peer learning, or self-awareness capabilities.
Prediction 2: By 2021, 25% of A2000 manufacturers will implement cyber-physical robot systems, leading to productivity gains of 10–20%.
Prediction 3: By 2020, 35% of the top 100 APEJ retailers will use robots in store distribution, potentially reducing order fulfillment costs by up to 20%.
These insights highlight the dynamic and fast-evolving nature of the robotics landscape in the Asia-Pacific region, offering a glimpse into the future of automation and its impact on industries worldwide.
