On July 15, 2017, BAIC New Energy launched a new electric vehicle following the success of the Euro400 series. Known as the EU300, this model offers both charging and battery swapping capabilities. With fast charging, the vehicle can reach an 80% charge in just 30 minutes, while swapping the battery takes merely 3 minutes.
The EU300, another addition to BAIC’s lineup, maintains a similar aesthetic to its predecessor, the EU260. It features a sleek black grille at the front and a trio of irregularly shaped taillights, giving it a modern look. The EU300 also highlights its 300 km range on the rear, along with a signature blue EV emblem. Depending on the trim level, it comes with various design options for wheels, sunroofs, grilles, fog lights, and logos, showcasing the differences across configurations.
Inside, the EU300’s cabin is straightforward yet functional. A 9-inch vertical touch screen and a rotary gear shifter, common in electric vehicles, dominate the dashboard. Surrounding the shifter, a blue accent highlights its eco-friendly credentials.
While the EU300 doesn’t wow with its exterior styling, it certainly excels in performance. Its powertrain includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering up to 100 kW and a ternary lithium-ion battery pack, enabling a total range of 300 km. Fast charging can get you to 80% in under half an hour, and the battery swap feature makes refueling as quick as refueling a gas-powered car—just 3 minutes.
Battery swapping isn't a new concept, much like how we once swapped out batteries on our phones. Imagine being able to switch out a depleted battery for a fully charged one at a dedicated station in mere minutes. This is exactly what the EU300 offers, saving time compared to hours-long charging sessions.
BAIC has been proactive in preparing for this technology. Back in July 2015, they partnered with Sinopec to utilize their gas station network for building battery swap stations. By September 2016, they had already set up 10 such stations, providing service to 2,000 taxis. Zhang Junyi, speaking on behalf of BAIC, mentioned that battery swapping could be particularly beneficial in public transportation and fixed locations, where costs would be lower and implementation easier.
As interest in new energy vehicles grows, the market continues to evolve. Early models were often seen as affordable but lacking in range and convenience. Today, advancements in battery technology, faster charging times, and expanding charging infrastructure have made electric vehicles more appealing. BAIC’s focus on long-range and versatile models has resonated well with consumers.
Looking back, pioneers like BYD helped spark the new energy revolution with innovative designs like the Song DM. Now, BAIC is joining the fray, consistently releasing new models and pushing the boundaries of what electric vehicles can do. It’s clear that the new energy sector is thriving, thanks to efforts from multiple automakers, and it’s only a matter of time before more consumers embrace these eco-friendly alternatives.
P.S. Lately, I’ve noticed fewer smoggy days in Beijing. Could it be partly due to the rise of new energy vehicles?
