According to reports from foreign tech media outlet Patently Mobile, Samsung recently had a new patent revealed which hints at some exciting features for its next-generation Gear VR. From the patent diagrams, we can see that the updated Gear VR includes a foldable touchpad, allowing users to adjust it to any angle they prefer. This innovative feature enables users to comfortably interact with the accessory at various positions.
The new Gear VR also introduces a transparent glass panel design for its face mask. This design allows users to view the external world through their Samsung Galaxy smartphone’s camera, providing them with an unobstructed view of their surroundings. Additionally, the system can offer users a picture-in-picture display mode, giving them a more immersive experience.
It’s worth noting that these new accessories connect to the Galaxy phone via USB. Furthermore, the Gear VR supports both panoramic and drone-based photography. Users can capture panoramic images by rotating the input controls or moving their heads while using the device.
This particular patent was filed by Samsung back in October 2016, but there's no official word yet on when this technology might hit the market. As someone who follows Samsung's developments closely, I’m really excited about what this could mean for virtual reality enthusiasts.
