How does Apple let people keep buying new iPhones? There is a theory that it will develop a degrading policy: the new iOS system tends to run slowly on older phones, forcing users to buy new phones.
But Apple said that this is not the case. The company has optimized this year's iOS 9 system and can even run smoothly on devices in 2011.
So, I tested iOS 9 on 4 iPhones, namely iPhone 4s, 5, 5s and 6. I found that at least this year, Apple's software did not make the old phone obvious.
Old iPhone users also need to pay attention to one thing: Apple has reduced the space occupied by iOS system from 4.58GB to 1.3GB this year. This makes it easy for users to upgrade without having to delete precious photos and critical applications.
Test 4 generation iPhone
In my tests, the slowdown of all iPhones was negligible. In the important task of processing pictures, the speed is obviously improved.
I tested iOS 8.4.1 on these phones separately, then wrote down the time of each action, from booting to the lock screen, launching the camera app, launching Safari, and viewing the photos I just took. I operate at least 3 times for each action and then calculate the average.
After that, I installed the final version of iOS9 on each phone and then repeated the above.
Safari browser startup speed in iOS 8 and iOS 9
In all phones, the speed of opening most apps either has not changed or has slowed slightly. For example, the time it took to launch Safari in an iPhone 5s with an iOS9 system was extended by 0.25 seconds.
In my tests, the biggest difference in time was the startup speed of the iPhone 5, and iOS9 was 3 seconds slower than iOS 8.
Picture task speed up
iOS9 also fixes some vulnerabilities in iOS8, which can quickly view and edit a photo after you have finished shooting. After Apple introduced the iCloud photo library earlier this year, the speed of this operation has slowed significantly.
With iOS9, you can view photos up to 80% faster, no matter how old your phone is. It’s worthwhile to upgrade iOS9 for this benefit alone, and there are many other good factors.
iOS7 and iOS8 initially had poor support for the old iPhone, and many users reported problems such as slow running. Apple eventually accelerated its speed through system updates.
This time, the company launched a public beta in advance and accumulated a lot of user feedback. However, this is not to say that you should not upgrade your hardware—especially when you value speed.
