SDN simplifies next-generation networks

On September 12, Brocade Technology Day was held at Brocade's US headquarters. According to Mike Klayko, CEO of Brocade, the simplification of the network through technological innovation is the direction of Brocade's future efforts and is also the core idea of building the next generation of global networks.

Simplification is abstraction and automation

"In engineering technology, simplification is the most basic concept," said Dave Stevens, chief technology officer of Brocade. "As the business gradually shifts to virtualization and the frequent use of various mobile terminals, the managers of data center networks are facing The new challenges, such as the increasing complexity of the network, the rapid consumption of bandwidth, the gradual increase in costs, etc. In the next decade, the network architecture will undergo a new change, and its fundamental goal is to simplify the network.”

In the past 20 years, the chief information officer of a company focused on applications, and the application was based on a centralized, multi-tiered data center. Now, as more and more individual users access the corporate network through various terminal devices, everyone can become the core of IT applications, and at the same time, it is a huge producer of network traffic. In this case, the multi-layered data center architecture in the past could not meet the needs of users, and the data center network will inevitably go flat.

"Abstraction and automation are the keys to simplifying the network," said Dave Stevens. "In terms of network infrastructure, the simplified network consists of two core components: Fabric and SDN (Software-Defined Network)." Brocade Fabric Through the abstract Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS) layer, the data center architecture can be integrated, effectively reducing the need for Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), automatic network repair and self-configuration, to better support virtual machines, and Plug services into the converged network architecture dynamically. SDN has a software abstraction layer. With programmable software, users can deploy, optimize and troubleshoot the network to improve the quality of network services. The underlying support technology for Fabric and SDN is virtualization.

Better support for virtualization

The current data center basically adopts a three-layer core network architecture, including an access layer, a convergence layer, and a core layer. The biggest change brought by the Brocade VDX series switches based on the VCS technology to the network is that it has transformed the traditional three-tier network architecture into two layers - the core layer and the edge layer, and achieved a flattening of the network architecture. Simplify the purpose of the network.

From Brocade introduced the VDX6720 switch in 2010 to VDX6710 and VDX6730 in 2011, and VDX8770 in September 2012. The VDX series switches are continuously upgraded to high-end, and the core technology platform of VDX series switches is also continuously improved and optimized. . Jason Nolet, vice president of Brocade's data center network group, said: "The latest VDX8770 is based on enhanced VCS technology. The biggest change in VCS is the software improvement, which has made VCS more scalable. At present, the world has More than 700 customers have selected Brocade VDX Series Switches."

The modular VDX8770 switch is designed for highly virtualized environments and can automatically discover and move virtual machines to accelerate application deployment and enable faster virtual machine migration. The release of the VDX8770 switches marks the third phase of Brocade's vision for a cloud-optimized network. At this stage, Brocade hopes to use the VDX8770 switch to help large-scale data center users enhance the flexibility of their network and improve automation and efficiency. The VDX8770 switch has higher performance, scalability, and load balancing capabilities. For example, with the VDX8770 switch, users can expand a single VCS network to a maximum of 8000 switch ports and support up to 384,000 virtual machines, which is 20 times more scalable than competing products. The VDX8770 switch also has extremely low latency, with latency of only 3.5 microseconds on 1GbE, 10GbE, and 40GbE ports.

Jason Nolet emphasized: "The VDX8770 chassis can support future technologies such as 100GbE, but it can also be applied to SDN architectures and provide more flexible hardware support for network virtualization through technologies such as VXLAN."

Hybrid SDN Application

In this Brocade Technology Day, the most talked about topic is SDN. Dave Stevens said: "In fact, as early as 2010, Brocade has announced support for SDN. Today's SDN development trend is a bit like 2001's IPv6. Although at this stage SDN can not be applied on a large scale, it is an inevitable trend. The future will surely enter the roadmap for the development of enterprise applications. SDN is a turning point in the future development of the network. "IDC's data show that by 2016, the global SDN market will reach $2 billion.

Brocade has 3 to 4 departments in the joint research and development of SDN technology, in which Brocade has a laboratory in Tokyo dedicated to research SDN. According to Dave Stevens, SDN's main impact is on the application layer. SDN brings the flexibility of software programming to the network. The foundation of SDN is virtualization, which can control the network through software programming. Brocade's goal is to extend SDN to the wide area network.

Dave Stevens said: "Now an ideal application model is a hybrid SDN, that is, SDN and traditional network infrastructure are compatible and coexist. We do not think that users will completely abandon the original network architecture because of adopting SDN. Not conducive to investment protection. SDN is based on the basic network architecture. "It is based on this understanding, Brocade does not launch a dedicated SDN products, but in the existing routers, switches to increase support for SDN, This can better support the hybrid SDN application mode. The VDX8770 switch launched on this tech day is an SDN-Ready device, while the MXLe core router launched at the same time will support SDN as a major selling point.

With the MXLe router's 24-port 10Gb module, large carriers and Internet data center users can create highly scalable, high-performance and optimized non-BGP MPLS super core networks, and can reduce IP routing from the core of the network by reducing the number of devices. , thereby simplifying the network architecture and reducing costs. Dave Stevens said: "This approach is also a key driver of SDN. With XMLe routers, SDN can take full advantage of OpenFlow technology to control individual traffic up to 100Gbps, thereby increasing the utilization of network resources and increasing the control of network traffic. Capacity.” By supporting OpenFlow in a hybrid mode, XMLe routers can seamlessly integrate with existing networks, allowing SDN to reconcile the functionality of traditional networks, enabling more flexible traffic control.

In addition to the introduction of SDN-enabled switches and routers, Brocade has also developed chips with programming capabilities that give Brocade an advantage in the SDN market. Because even if the version of the OpenFlow protocol is upgraded or the standard changes, Brocade can guarantee that its existing SDN solution can meet future application needs as long as it changes the software accordingly.

Liu Weicheng, regional sales director of Brocade's Asia Pacific application delivery product and service department, analyzed that “Universities, telecom operators, and data center service providers will take the lead in adopting SDN. In the past, network managers needed to configure all devices in the network one by one. It is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and with the ever-increasing scale of data centers and the increasing number of devices, the traditional manual configuration methods can no longer meet the needs of applications.Using SDN, administrators can not only complete network and device configuration at one time through software programming. , And can also carry out flow control and system tuning. SDN can simplify the deployment and management of the network, eliminate network failures in time, and thus continuously improve the quality of service, which can benefit large enterprises and cloud service providers with multiple data centers ."
