The same laser positioning, this domestic manufacturers do better than HTC Vive?

The last time G-Wearables (Beijing Guocheng Wantong Information Technology Co., Ltd.) held a new product launch conference in September last year, at that time released a complete set of equipment, covering backpack wireless processor, full-body motion capture sensor, hand recognition Sensors, space positioning equipment, and so on, are eager to solve the annoying cables, large-space location tracking and other issues in the VR experience.

At that time, there was no computer maker to make a "back pack" for the VR experience. G-Wearables' products naturally attracted a lot of attention.

G-Wearables CEO Guo Cheng

StepVR is a set of positioning solutions?

On July 20th, G-Wearables held a strategic cooperation conference with Petty Science and Technology. After adapting STEPVR's customized helmet with Miniature, multiplayer interactive experience can be realized in a large space. For different markets, C-side and B-side, STEPVR will introduce different positioning solutions.

According to Guo Cheng, founder of G-Wearable, STEPVR mainly solves input technologies, including:

Backpack data processing unit

Standard Action Attitude Capture Unit

Space positioning laser emitting unit

Virtual reality interactive handle.

Live demonstration equipment

The laser emission positioning unit adopts distributed laser scanning and positioning technology, which can achieve millimeter-level indoor positioning; the motion capture unit can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of indoor positioning technologies; the handle part can achieve 360-degree tracking and vibration feedback.

For the positioning solution, Guo Cheng said that it will face the C- and B-side markets, C-end can be used for home use, and B-side is mainly for VR games, education and tourism, and movie animation capture. At the same time, the C-terminal product adopts two laser emitting units, which is similar to the HTC Vive's location tracking scheme; and obviously, for the B-side program under the offline experience, StepVR has introduced a standard positioning configuration scheme - a "big box". Four positioning laser emitting units.

More accurate laser positioning than HTC Vive?

Laser emitting unit is bigger than Vive's Lighthouse

It must be said that, whether it is the principle of laser positioning, or from the live display, STEPVR positioning scheme is very similar to HTC VIve. But Guo Cheng said, "We are more complicated."

"The laser is snaking around and it can be launched very far. The principle of positioning is to look at the angle of the laser. If you find two lights at the same time, you can't tell the angle of the laser." He used two people at the same time. Speaking analogy. When you have two people with your eyes closed and speak to you at the same time, you are in the position to distinguish the sound, and two people are still changing positions, so HTC Vive's positioning "can not let the same acceptance position received two lasers at the same time. “

STEPVR can place four positioning laser emitting units in the same space. If the 5X5 standard space is not enough, it can continue to increase the launch unit, expand the physical space area, and achieve the same space experience for many people. Indeed, this is one point that Vive cannot currently achieve.

Live experience

Two-person online demonstration

At the scene, the organizer built two 5x5 standard “big boxes” with a black curtain in the middle to separate the two spaces. Removing the curtains will not affect the tracking effect. However, since the helmet and the mobile capture unit attached to the helmet are two separate parts, this unit also requires additional battery power, which inevitably increases the weight of the head, plus a 3 kilogram “backpack”. It also appears slightly more complicated when worn.

Wouldn’t it be better to integrate the helmet and moving capture unit? Weng Zhibin, CEO of Polytech Technology, also expressed this possibility, and will make the device more compact without special charging.

In addition, the two games for experience can achieve a two-person online experience, and one of the decrypted games uses the game elements of Monument Valley. Two players wear good equipment. After entering the game, they can see the other person's virtual character image. The two can successfully pass the task through cooperation. This is still quite attractive.

Slightly regrettable, because the "backpack" and the mobile capture unit lasts for about an hour, if two players on-line have a shortage of battery power, they need to start over. In the short-term hands-on experience, the author found that the handle will appear flickering, and the specific long-term use is still unclear.

It is understood that STEPVR's home positioning plan will be announced before the end of the year. With regard to the C-end helmet and positioning equipment, Weng Zhibin said that it is possible to take bundled sales, depending on consumer demand, the price will be "in line with China's national conditions," and the speculation may be lower than the HTC Vive.
