Netflix CEO: Traditional Radio and TV Die in 16 Years

Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO

On November 29th, Netflix CEO Redd Hastings said in a speech in Mexico City that traditional broadcasting services will disappear in 2030.

In his speech, Hastings talked about the rise of Netflix in Latin America, saying that television will become another victim of streaming video services. He said: "Broadcasting and television can only last until 2030."

Hastings also compared radio and television services to horses. He said: "Radio and television services are like a horse. Before the advent of the car, it was quite useful."

Prior to this, Hastings also published "the theory of television extinction." For example, in April 2013, he published an 11-page article on the Netflix website saying that Internet TV will completely replace broadcast television in the coming decades.

A year and a half later, radio and television service providers such as HBO, Showtime, and CBS launched their own mobile applications. In addition, the United States satellite television provider Network is also preparing for Internet set-top-box pay-TV services, plans to bundle Disney-owned ESPN channels and US cable channel AE.

The advertising revenue of radio and television services has already fallen into a quandary. In the past 10 years, only advertising revenues in 2011 and 2012 have continued to grow. The industry generally believes that in the next two years, advertisers will invest more budget into digital platforms than television.

Although Hastings did not specify which data led him to believe that radio and television would die in 2030, it was not him who held this view. Cisco surveyed 50 television experts in 2011 and also believes that traditional television viewing will die in 2030.
